A large fortified city under the influence of the Parthian Empire and the capital of the First Arab Kingdom, Hatra withstood Roman invasions in AD 116 and 198 thanks to its paintings. High and thick walls are reinforced with towers. What remains of the city, especially the temples where Greek and Roman architecture blended with oriental touches, testify to the greatness of its civilization.
